#NASARoman’s fine-guidance system, which allows the observatory to lock very steadily onto its targets during observations, passed a spate of tests from Sept. 15 to 21. Then on Sept. 22, the mission’s Coronagraph Instrument opened its eyes to cosmic light for the very first time.
NASA has now confirmed all ground stations supporting the agency’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope are ready to receive the mission’s high volume of data once science operations begin by early 2027. #NASARoman 🔭
What was it like to witness the launch of the #NASARoman Space Telescope? I got to share my thoughts in this STScI newsletter article: www.stsci.edu/contents/new...
Roman had a bake-out. We had a bake-off. 🎂🚀
While #NASARoman warmed up to help release condensed gases, @stsci.edu staff fired up their ovens to lock in delicious flavors.
The results were out of this world! 🔭🧁

Scoops After Launch! 🚀🍦😋
The Roman Science Support Center (SSC) at IPAC celebrated #NASARoman's launch with an ice cream social—marking years of work behind us and exciting science still ahead. #ExpandingOurView 🔭
Now that the WFI is on, are you excited to get your hands on Roman data?

So excited to see even these first test images from the Wide Field Instrument knowing our surveys are only months away — go #NASARoman 🔭 💫
First light (test) for #NASARoman!
#NASARoman activated the Wide Field Instrument—a 300-megapixel infrared camera that will allow it to explore wide swaths of the cosmos quickly. This test image captures the very first photons of starlight to reach the instrument—taken as an initial performance assessment: https://go.nasa.gov/4rg4qEc
Huuurraaay! Some good news from #NASARoman!
“As a result of exquisite planning by our orbital dynamics team, brilliant execution by the operations team, and a precise launch from SpaceX, Roman has fuel for at least 22 years of potential science operations,” said Jamie Dunn, center director at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. #NASARoman 🔭
“Hubble and Webb are like looking through a keyhole at an individual object,” says Kristen McQuinn, who heads the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope mission office at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. “With Roman, it’s like opening the door, and now you see everything." 🔭 #NASARoman
Roman may be a million-mile journey to L2, but back on Earth, thousands of astronomers are getting ready for the data.
While Roman Flies to L2… we'll be introducing you to the surveys, scientists, software, and science questions waiting for Roman.
🎙️ In Part 2 of our interview with our President, Megan Tremer discusses Teledyne Space Imaging’s milestone of 1000 scientific detectors in space, its rich heritage and the imaging needs of future space science missions
#NASARoman is currently on its way to L2 where gravitational forces balance to keep objects in steady orbits with very little assistance. The animation begins shortly after launch and concludes with Roman entering its halo orbit around L2. Keep up with commissioning: https://go.nasa.gov/4gS6Zrb 🔭
#NASARoman’s Coronagraph Instrument is powered on and being tested as we speak 🔋 ⚡️ 🔭
Check out these photos from the Coronagraph Command Center at IPAC, right when we confirmed that the instrument turned on!
Just realized amateur astrophotographers are out here with multi-camera setups casually sniping NASA satellites zipping across the sun like it’s nothing, while I struggle to take a photo of my cat without it being blurry. Absolute legends. 🌌🔭 #astrophotography #space #nasaroman
