During this period, seaweeds Laminaria was burned in stone pits to produce ash rich in soda, potash, & later iodine. Seaweed utilisation by coastal communities in the Atlantic dates back to antiquity, being used as a food source, animal feed and also agricultural resource. #coastalhistory #muSEAum

In the case of the ‘Lady Annesley’s traps’ a stone #fishweir located at Newcastle Beach. The beach, has a very gentle slope and an extensive intertidal zone of of almost 400 metres at average low tide, making it an ideal location for building intertidal structures. 2/2 #coastalhistory #muSEAum
