Standing Stone or Menhir, #Dartmoor

Clearly one that Obelix brought over from Gaul and left behind.

I loathe alliteration. So here is:

"The Toadstool and Turd on the Tor"

@ Peter Tor, #Dartmoor

(Possible name for a Hipster pub selling 'craft' beer?)

for #aofoto

#WackyWednesdayArt #Landscape #ECK #LandscapePhotography #nature #moorland #Devon

The photograph shows a toadstool (fungus) growing from a dried up Dartmoor pony stool (or turd, in British vernacular ) near the summit of Peter Tor on Dartmoor.

Brentor - from the edge of Dartmoor

#LandscapePhotography #Photography #PhotographersUnited #PhotographersofBluesky #Landscape #Moorland #Dartmoor #Devon

A untypical Dartmoor day - it's not raining. Looking out over the western edge of the moor can be seen ancient field systems and the mount of Brentor. Brentor has been a site of religious significance long before Christianity arrived in Britain. The tor is a volcanic rock formation created around 350 million years ago. Rising up 70 metres from the surrounding landscape, the tor’s natural defensive advantages were initially used as an Iron Age hillfort – from which earthworks and ramparts can be found around its base.

The church of Saint Michael de Rupe (Saint Michael of the Rock) was founded in 1130 by local landowner Robert Giffard. Robert’s father had come to England during the Norman conquest, and had been given estates in Devon. It was initially a small chantry chapel and much smaller than it now appear; most of the church as it is today dates to the 13th and 14th century.

Wheal Betsy, Dartmoor. A copper and tine mine.

#ColorADay #BWFri #LandscapePhotography #PhotographersofBluesky #PhotographersUnited #Landscape #moorland #mine #abandoned #derelict #monochrome #BlackandWhite
#Dartmoor #Devon

An abandoned copper and tin mine on the western edge of Dartmoor. This is the engine house, set amidst a typical moorland landscape. The engine house was built as a last ditch attempt to dewater the mine and restore it to profit. The attempt failed by 1877 yet it remains as a monument to the generations of long-gone miners on Dartmoor. It's the only surviving, extant Cornish engine house to remain on the moor. All others have been demolished - as this was nearly was by the army in the 1950s. It's now in the care of the National Trust.

#Sunrise on the #moor. My morning run takes me up to a trig point on the moors. This concrete pillar marks the highest point on this particular rigg (hill between dales). It used to be used for triangulation in mapping. It's now my leaning pillar.

The sun rises on the north york moors national park. The triangulation point on the top of the concrete pillar is at the bottom.of the photo, the moorland stretches beyond and out towards the rising sun

Nothing quite like sunrise on the moorland. Being out and smelling the air, feeling the wind on your face, hearing the sound of the birds. Not a soul to be seen.... other than deer, stoats, birds and obviously the Swaledale 🐏

The sun peers above the track through the edge of the forestry. The track still covered in shadow, the sky yellow and blue through the clouds. The pine and birch are silhouetted. The moorland with standing deadwood infront of the rising sun. The Heather is a fine purple this time of year and sets the scene perfectly. The Moorland under an early sky of yellow and blue. Clouds sit overhead with no breaks for miles. Two swaledale sheep forage in the heath for greenery, as one keeps a cautious eye on me. Patches of marsh are highlighted with the yellowing marsh grass, sedge and rush. The distant hills of the North York Moors are still silhouetted against the morning horizon.
