One gene, reads off two machines, nowhere to see them together. readhit puts .ab1 traces and NGS reads on the same reference in the browser, depth and consensus under them. Files stay with you. Free, no account. Beta.

Letcher et al. reveal how Mesorhabditis nematodes evolved a new Y chromosome from sexual ancestors in species that transitioned into autopseudogamy - females produce clonal females plus rare males that are needed for fertilization.

MBE | Emergence and stabilization of a neo-Y chromosome in nematode species with rare males

In this work, Letcher et al. study the sex chromosomes of nematodes that have transitioned away from sexuality, into a mode of reproduction where most individuals (~90%) are females. Rare males (~10%) are also found and produce sperm that is necessary for fertilisation of female eggs. However in most cases, the paternal DNA is discarded, and clonal daughters are produced. Surprisingly, in the rare cases where the paternal DNA is used, only males are ever produced.

The team found that these rare males carry a new Y chromosome that evolved specifically with this strange mode of reproduction. This Y chromosome carries genes likely to make these males fitter, and carries factors that enable sperm carrying the Y to preferentially fertilise female eggs. In the long run, these factors have probably stabilised the Y chromosome in these populations.
