We're just beginning to explore what personalized #miBrains can teach us about individual brain biology and disease. Follow along as we continue to learn more and share our findings from the Blanchard Lab.

One of the most exciting applications of #miBrains in the Blanchard Lab is the prospect of personalized medicine.

Because miBrains start from human cells, they can be engineered to match an individual donor's genetic profile – starting from something as simple as a skin biopsy.

This picture depicts two primary cell types in the miBrain, the endothelial cell vasculature (red) and the pericytes (green). This miBrain was aged in culture for 3 weeks, allowing for complex 3D morphology to arise, and notably, the pericytes are wrapping themselves around the vasculature to support their stability, growth and barrier function.

Special shoutout to first author Braxton Schuldt for leading this work as part of his PhD, & congratulations to our entire team here @scbrmmountsinai.bsky.social.

Excited to build on these findings and see what else we can uncover with #miBrains.

To investigate the mechanisms driving these changes, we leveraged #miBrains, our 3D multicellular human brain tissue model, and found that APOE4 expression in mural cells was both necessary and sufficient to drive pericyte loss and myofibroblast accumulation.
