Your first response will not always work.

Maryland Systema training changes pressure, distance, direction, and position so you learn to adjust instead of relying on a memorized sequence.

Breathe. Protect your balance. Keep moving. Find another answer.

Maryland Systema does not use belts, uniforms, forms, or tournaments.

Training focuses on breathing, balance, awareness, movement, distance, and adapting when conditions change.

You are not trying to make every situation fit a memorized response.

In a first Maryland Systema class, beginners often notice the same things: held breath, extra tension, lost balance, and tunnel vision.

That is useful information. Once you notice those habits, you can start changing them.

Videos show you someone else's Systema training.

A seminar lets you feel your own balance, tension, movement and reactions when distance and pressure change.

That firsthand experience tells you far more.

Try the training. Ask questions. Decide for yourself.

Curious about Systema? Experience it before deciding what you think.

A seminar lets you explore changing distance, balance, grabs, strikes, restricted movement, and physical pressure firsthand.

Ask questions. Test the ideas. Decide for yourself.

What happens to your breathing when pressure rises?

You may hold it, shorten it, or speed it up before you notice the tension.

Systema training helps you catch that change earlier so you can keep moving, observing, and deciding.

Self-defense is not a contest.

Trying to “win” can keep you involved after you already have a way out.

Protect yourself, create space, and leave when you can. You do not need to prove anything.

Pressure can narrow your attention fast.

You focus on the grab or push and stop noticing balance, open space, or an exit.

Systema training asks whether you can keep taking in information and make a useful decision while someone is disrupting you.

Pain gets a reaction. Control changes the situation.

Instead of asking, “Did that hurt?” ask:

Did their balance change?
Did I gain space?
Can I move?
Can I leave safely?

Self-defense should not depend on someone reacting to pain the way you expect.

Awkward positions reveal a lot.

When your balance changes or space gets tight, tension often appears fast. Systema training helps you notice it, keep moving, and improve your position without relying on ideal conditions.

Striking reveals habits you may not notice otherwise: leaning, held breath, raised shoulders, or feet that stop moving.

Partner drill: A changes position. B strikes slowly, stops short of contact, then moves to a new angle. A watches for tension or lost balance. Switch roles.
