Here the story completely departs from reality - when Thor points out to the tech psychopath that his own mother might be killed by his stupid idea, it actually gets through to him.

Thor frees himself as Jasper gloats about Crypto Man. But he thinks twice when Thor points out that if Crypto Man destroys the atomic power plant, Jasper’s mother will die too.

Thor attempts to engage Crypto Man in battle, but Jasper intervenes and uses his control beam turned up to maximum. The blast kills him and destroys his invention. Later, Don Blake lies to Jasper’s mom and says it was all a lab accident that got out of control, and tells her that her worthless piece of crap son died a hero.

Jack must have drawn a million action scenes for Marvel by this point, and he never phoned in one of them. The sense of weight and impact and speed is always palpable. In a class by himself.

With his reduced power, Thor fights with the Crypto-Man and they prove to be well matched. Thor suspects his opponent possesses his stolen power.

He feeds Thor’s stolen power into the robot, who demonstrates his new strength by smashing a machine.

Thor awakens in a weakened state and knows he was trapped. Flying back to Don Blake’s office, he sees an older woman within who is struggling with misery and faintness. Changing to Don Blake, he recognizes her as Mrs Whyte and asks about her condition.

She tells him she’s worried about her adult son Jasper, a brilliant scientist who is mad at the world. He’s the same guy who stole Thor’s power, of course. On the opposite page, ads for matchbox cars and Grit newspapers.

Self-contained story, not very involving at first, but the theme of a tech psycho glorying in a theft-based new technology that’s going to make everyone miserable or dead does feel relevant. Great Kirby/Everett teamwork too!

Thor investigates the lights and is zapped into unconsciousness. As he falls, the same man from the cover stands with his rifle and congratulates himself on how well his plan is working. He catches Thor in a plastic net, uses a machine to drain half of Thor’s strength, then gets away in a car.

Two page spread. Left side is split between ads for a set of collectible coins and a Karate training program. Right side shows the man driving. To a warehouse, unlocking a secret panel, and revealing a hi tech room with a big robot in it that he calls his Crypto Man.
