This wooden structure symbolically evokes a khettara—the Moroccan term for the filtration gallery known in other regions as a qanât, foggara, or karez—an underground water collection system that became widespread in the Haouz of Marrakesh between the 10th and 12th centuries and whose most extensive network was excavated in Tafilalet beginning in the late 14th century.
