Tempio N, Selinunte

#photography #history #archaeology #Sicily #MagnaGraecia

Small temple in the western sector of the Selinunte archaeological site in the Sicilian province of Trapani. The first sacred building encountered south of the Malophoros enclosure is a temple, commonly called the Triolo building after the family that owned a property in the area. It is preceded by a large altar and enclosed within a sacred area bordered to the south by a peribolos wall. The building appears to be an archaic temple of considerable proportions, oriented east-west with a slight southward inclination. Built of marine sandstone, it has a rectangular plan divided into three parts: a pronaos, naos, and aditon, accessible through tapered doors set in the front and dividing walls. Traces found on the temple's interior walls suggest they were plastered with a fine ivory-white stucco. Thanks to meticulous restoration, the north and south sides of the building, which had probably collapsed due to an earthquake at an unknown time, have been reconstructed . We know for certain that the building, after the destruction of the city (409 BC), was reused by the Carthaginians who added a portico with pillars surmounted by Egyptian-style capitals to the eastern front, while the altar placed in front of the front was used to collect votive offerings. Among the materials found during the excavation, the statuettes depicting a kourotrophos are interesting, which identify the building as dedicated to a female divinity (Hera) whose cult, given the archaic nature of the construction, seems to have roots in the colonial phase as well as in other Magna Graecia cities where she was venerated as queen and patron of nature, animals, war, but above all of the female life cycle: wedding (hierogamy), childbirth (eileithia), motherhood (kourotrophos).
