The spooky season has started, and we at Yesterday's Matinee are celebrating this year by discussing one of the earliest horror films, #ThePhantomoftheOpera. Come join Berta, Courtney, Jon and me on Patreon for the delightful discussion. #LonChaney

Here we've been talking #LonChaney all night and I could have mentioned MGM originally wanted him for the role of Butch in The Big House (1930), but he was already too ill to take it on.
I often think about what a different movie it would be. I can only imagine a much more intense Butch! #TCMParty

"Do you hear a piteous wailing interspersed with threats of terrible vengeance?"
"Probably just the wind."

The fact that neither Christine nor Raoul apparently gave any thought as to how they would find each other in the crowd of masked revelers is totally on brand for both of them

If the phrase "aroused by your purity" isn't a red flag, I don't know what is

I know Hollywood loves movies about Hollywood, but really? For that screenplay?

This magenta tint certainly is a choice

I’m not too embarrassed to admit (ok, maybe more than alittle 😬) I didn’t know anything about #LonChaney b4 2nite. @tcmtv.bsky.social new series has been a success in expanding my movie knowledge #TCMParty #ManofAThousandFaces #FilmonFilms @benmank77.bsky.social

Boy, they put exactly zero effort into finding an actress who looks like Mary Philbin for this reenactment of #ThePhantomOfTheOpera

Robert Evans as Irving Thalberg!

Why the hell did he buy a house way the hell out in the middle of nowhere? She has no friends, no neighbors, no wonder she's climbing up the walls.

She looks like she's having fun as the bookstore clerk who picks up Humphrey Bogart's Philip Marlowe in #TheBigSleep

Narrator: The love interest is a girl he found as a baby and raised in the circus.
Me: 😲
Narrator: The actress was fourteen years old.
Me: 😬

There's a Lon Chaney collection from TCM Archives that includes this documentary with #AceOfHearts, #LaughClownLaugh, #TheUnknown (missing some footage that has since been rediscovered), and a reconstruction of #LondonAfterMidnight

I’m a big fan of Priscilla Dean’s silent films. She always played a tough dame up for any kind of adventure.

I've always thought Lon's upbringing in a deaf and mute household might have been why son Creighton/jr. thought his father was sometimes difficult to connect to. That legacy loomed large, too. #LonChaney #TCM #TCMParty

Horror films or not, but most of Lon Chaney’s movies were about unrequited love.
