17 September 1905, and The People reports rather breathlessly on an Orient win at Lincoln. "From the kick-off the visitors raced away and netted the leather a second time in a scrimmage. Play now became very exciting, but the shooting on both sides was somewhat erratic for a time..." #lofc #lofpress

A cutting from The People, 17 September 1905, reading:

LINCOLN CITY V. CLAPTON ORIENT.

These teams met for the first time at Lincoln in splendid weather, before 3,000 spectators. The visitors kicked off, but the Lincolners were the first to make a really useful attack, good shots coming quickly from the right wing, Martin, the centre forward, shooting a trifle wide. Lincoln continued to be aggressive, and the game ruled fast, but Clapton broke away, and G. Lamberton opened the scoring from a capital centre by Kingaby. Lincoln got going again after this, and Taylor was successful in getting through, thus bringing matters equal. From the kick-off the visitors raced away and netted the leather a second time in a scrimmage. Play now became very exciting, but the shooting on both sides was somewhat erratic for a time. An improvement was soon made, and the homesters, after having appealed unsuccessfully for a goal scored through Dixon, equalised, the interval score being Lincoln, 2; Clapton, 2. On the resumption there was again a display of vigorous kicking, and each custodian was called upon to save long shots. In a general scrimmage a man was hurt from each team, and had to leave the field. During the absence of the Clapton player the homesters had hard luck in not scoring on two occasions. On the return of the Lincoln man the visitors got through the defence, Everson registering their third goal. Time came with play fairly even, and the score: Clapton 3; Lincoln, 2.
