The Citizenry
Opened to the citizenry, where money, movement, and manners overlap

A vertically arranged mixed-media collage evokes an elegant European city between the 1920s and mid-century, rendered in cream paper, charcoal black, muted blue-gray, and weathered sepia. At upper left, oversized black serif lettering reads, “Opened to the citizenry in foreign currencies.” Beneath it are fragments of a foreign bank document and circular stamp. Arched windows, faint architectural drawings, looping pen marks, and the ghostly outline of a tall city tower dissolve into the paper. Near the upper center, italic lettering declares, “Life is more joyous,” while at upper right a dark-haired man in a formal black suit and tie emerges from a dense black watercolor field beside the words “a discreet gentleman.” The middle section becomes a rainy urban street filled with early automobiles and men in brimmed hats, accompanied by the handwritten phrase “in the flow of automobiles.” A distinguished mustached man occupies the center, while to his right a dark-haired woman holding a small glass stands among other elegantly dressed women beneath the words “those young ladies.” Lower down, a scholar bends over papers and an open book beside the fragment “the boys will be stealing, agreeing with a scholar.” A torn scrap at center reads “Without question” above a handwritten signature. At lower right, a young blonde woman with pale blue eyes looks outward beside text describing her straight hair and rare sense of self-possession. Sketches of automobiles, distant architecture, a globe, ink splatters, graph lines, torn paper edges, and overlapping handwritten marks unify the composition, making the entire page resemble an illustrated literary notebook assembled from observations, quotations, and fleeting encounters.
