After a recent trip to #LincolnCathedral, I’m happy to report that the world’s oldest tennis ball is still lodged in the mouldings near the Galilee Porch. Got stuck there in 1914 when a boy called Gilbert Bell was playing catch with his brother. See alt text for full story.

The story of the stuck ball became a family legend and whenever they visited Lincoln, Gilbert’s relatives would check to see it was still there. In 2005, the story surfaced when his nephew, David, wrote to the cathedral asking (jokingly) if they could please have the ball back. It predates the tennis ball in the museum at Wimbledon (dated 1916) and is thought to be the oldest in the world.
