SEPTEMBER 25
FRIDAY.
Sukkot begins.
THIS DAY IN HISTORY.

1926: Henry Ford adopts the five-day workweek.

On September 5- 1926, Ford Motor Company became one of the first
companies in America to adopt the five-day, forty-hour workweek when Henry Ford announced the change. In the early 1920s, Ford decided to make the shift from the six-day workweek to five and bumped factory pay from $2.34 to $5 per day. "Just as the eight-hour day opened our way to prosperity in America, so the five-day workweek will open our way to still
greater prosperity... It is high time to rid ourselves of the notion that leisure for workmen is either lost time or a class privilege," Ford said. He knew the change would boost morale for his factory workers, allowing them to spenc
more than one day a week with families, take short vacations, and enjoy more leisure activities.
Although his new policy decreased the working time in the factory, production line productivity boomed and loyalty to his company was stronger than ever. Ford's decision to empower his employees to work smarter for shorter periods of time and enable more rest inspired manufacturers and eventually professional firms to adopt the same policy, thus shifting the framework for the American workday for generations.
