"Unlike other movements for social change that require joining organisations and attending meetings, we can begin the process of making community wherever we are."

"Moving from solitude into community heightens our capacity for fellowship with one another. Through fellowship we learn how to serve one another. Service is another dimension of communal love."

"Knowing how to be solitary is central to the art of loving. When we can be alone, we can be with others without using them as a means of escape ... in solitude we find the place where we can truly look at ourselves and shed the false self."

I'm coming to the end of bell hooks' chapter on 'Greed' in all about love.

I think she's harsh about Monica Lewinsky. And earlier in the chapter, I felt she was quite unsympathetic about addiction.

It's a book of hard truths, but this may be the first time I've disagreed with it.

"When greedy consumption is the order of the day, dehumanisation becomes acceptable. Then, treating people like objects is not only acceptable but is required behaviour. It's the culture of exchange, the tyranny of marketplace values."

"Not only did individuals despair about their capacity to change the world, they began to feel enormous despair about their ability to make positive changes in the emotional fabric of their daily lives."

"Instead of looking for justice in the public world, individuals turned to their private lives, seeking a place of solace and escape."

"Intense spiritual and emotional lack in our lives is the perfect breeding ground for material greed and overconsumption."

Am thinking about that idea that the seduction of high-consumption is what protects capitalism from revolution.

"Domination cannot exist in any social situation where a love ethic prevails. Jung's insight, that if the will to power is paramount love will be lacking, is important... All the great social movements for freedom and justice ... promoted a love ethic."

"Fear...promotes the desire for separation, the desire not to be known... When we choose to love we choose to move against fear—against alienation and separation. The choice to love is a choice to connect—to find ourselves in the other."

from bell hooks, all about love: "Cultures of domination rely on the cultivation of fear as a way to ensure obedience. In our society we make much of love and say little about fear. Yet we are all terribly afraid most of the time. As a culture we are obsessed with the motion of safety. Yet we do not question why we live in states of extreme anxiety and dread. Fear is the primary force upholding structures of domination. It promotes the desire for separation, the desire not to be known. When we are taught that safety lies always with sameness, then difference, of any kind, will appear as a threat. When we choose to love we choose to move against fear—against alienation and separation. The choice to love is a choice to connect—to find ourselves in the other."
