Tagebucheintrag vom 12. Oktober 1939

In der Webergasse (»Fressgasse«): in den Fisch-, Schokolade- etc. Geschäften oft statt der Waren das Bild des Führers mit Fahnentuch und Siegesgrün. In einem Süßigkeitenladen alle Herrlichkeiten im Fenster; darüber: »Es kann nicht garantiert werden, dass alle hier ausgelegten Waren zu haben sind.« Im Reka verlangte ich fünf Handbürstchen, Stück zu 7 Pf. Strenge Antwort: »Ich gebe Ihnen drei.« Rasierseife (auf Marken!) nirgends zu haben. Soll erst kommen. Nachher soll das Stück drei Monate reichen. In den Fischläden ständige Antwort: »Sie müssen um zehn oder um drei kommen. Nachher ist alles weg.« In Süßigkeitenläden drängt man sich und erhält Zuckerzeug für 7 oder 12 Pf. Schokolade ist beschlagnahmt. Aber wirkliche Not wie 1917/18 herrscht
nicht, und ich sehe nicht ein, wie sie je eintreten soll, da doch Russland liefert.

In the Webergasse ("gluttons' alley"): in the fishmongers', confectioners' etc. the goods are often replaced by the picture of the Führer with flag cloth and victory green. In one candy shop all their excellencies in the window; above them: We cannot guarantee that all the goods displayed here are available. In the Reka I asked for five little handbrushes at 7Pf each. Stem reply: I'll give you three. Shaving soap (for ration coupons!) nowhere to be had. Hasn't arrived yet. When it does, one piece will have to last three months. In the fishmongers' the constant reply: You must come at ten or three. Everything's gone after that. One elbows one's way into confectioners' and receives 7 or 12 pfennigs' worth of sweets. Chocolate has been confiscated. - But there is no real shortage as in 1917-18, and it is hard to see how it should happen, since supplies are coming from Russia.
