A Spanish word came to mind yesterday:

Impepinablemente

Im: from “in”, a negative suffix
Pepin: lexically pepino, cucumber
Able: can be done
Mente: the -ly ending for adverbs

We use it in La Mancha as “unavoidably”, although RAE says “surely”

You can also be “hasta el moño” (bun - the hairdo) o genitalia expressed the rude way.

Then we have “hasta las cejas” o “hasta el culo” which can mean “a lot”, the former often used for food, the latter for alcohol, but we can also be “hasta las cejas de trabajo”

Spanish Challenge Friday!

Native speakers: what’s a Spanish phrase learners use that sounds correct, but you’d almost never say naturally?

I’m especially curious about phrases that are grammatically fine but still sound obviously non-native.

What comes to mind?

12 October means something different in every Spanish-speaking country 🌎

In Spain it's a national holiday; elsewhere it's contested, reimagined or renamed. Punto y Coma N.122 explores them all. → buff.ly/3L2sBTA

Language Lesson Learned Thursday!

“Pero” and “sino” can both translate as “but,” but “sino” is closer to “but rather” or “but instead.”

“Quiero ir, pero estoy cansado.”
I want to go, but I’m tired.

“No quiero café, sino té.”
I don’t want coffee, but rather tea.

Spanish Idiom Wednesday!

“Estar hasta las narices.”

Literally: “To be up to your nose.”

It means to be completely fed up with something or someone.

“Estoy hasta las narices de este tráfico.”

Do you use this expression? If not, what do you say instead?
