Standing to See

Mama Belle and Coy are back at the river for evening three - there are so many bear fishing that they have to keep close watch. Standing helps their view and mum’s, too, as she fishes.

Hustle and Catch

Watching bear fish was fun. They started off slowly, then rushed to their catch. It looked like they lost it, but they raise their beautiful heads and there was the fish in their mouth.

While the other bear fishing were running, jumping and diving, Shelli and her yearlings just took it easy. Just slow nose fishing and meandering down the river - if they caught a fish, they caught a fish if they didn’t they didn’t care.

Tense Moment
This was one of the very few moments of tension while I was filming in Katmai. If it was tense for those of us watching, I can’t even imagine what the cameraman felt as Shelli’s three extremely large yearlings checked him out.

We met Shelli and her three yearlings - yes yearlings - the first day, they walked right by camp and clammed like crazy day 2, but on Day 3 they showed their magnificence. Two of the them had a bit of a tussle while mum looks on.

Bear on a Mission

This bear was on a fishing mission and completely ignored the BBC cameraman who held on tight to his gear and stayed low. The bear was successful in her hunt!

Stan was teaching me how to work on slow motion video this trip. I have this great little series of this bear going after a fish. I love how rich her fur is in the last section.
