Our mission extends beyond food access. We are also committed to helping heal the historical trauma many Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color carry in their relationship with the land due to the legacy of enslavement and systemic inequities. By reconnecting people with the practice of growing food, we hope to cultivate healing, self-sufficiency, and pride across generations.

We envision a future where every child grows up with access to nutritious food, a healthy environment, and the knowledge to sustain themselves and their community. That vision is what drives our work every day.I was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, an urban community where access to fresh, healthy food has long been limited. Growing up, I relied on the Standard American Diet—high in processed foods and sugar—because those were the most accessible options. While this may seem unusual to some, it was my reality and remains the reality for many families in Newark today.

My perspective changed during my Peace Corps service in Eswatini, where I met my husband, Mancoba. He grew up learning permaculture practices and sharing that knowledge within his community. Inspired by our shared passion for food justice and sustainability, we founded Ubuntu Permaculture Mission Inc. to help residents of Newark and other urban and rural communities throughout New Jersey learn sustainable ways of living that care for both people and the planet.

Our work centers on building strong community relationships while teaching individuals and families how to grow their own food. Nothing motivates us more than witnessing the life-changing impact that access to fresh, organic produce and agricultural education can have. We believe that healthy food and the knowledge to produce it are powerful social determinants of health that can transform lives and strengthen communities.photo of Akirah, a black woman wearing a yellow shirt for "Ubuntu permaculture mission"
