Erika Giovanna Klien was an Austrian-American artist at the forefront of the Viennese Kineticism movement. Mixing elements of Cubism, Futurism and Constructivism, Klien’s art focused on capturing dynamic movement on canvas. She was passionate about theater and dance and many of her subjects were dancers in motion. She took her expertise in twirling bodies and applied the same techniques to birds in flight and rotating machinery. Like Futurism, Kineticism looked to modern life and technology for inspiration. “The Driller” from 1951 was the artist looking back to an earlier work she completed in 1923, but this later work captures the workman’s every move as he works the drill whereas the 1923 painting was more straight-forward. Using tonal shadows and simplified forms, Klien created a work that is modern in subject and atmosphere. There is little detail but intricate detail is neither needed nor missed.
