To Robyn Chapman: Three biggest mistakes with pitches?Not having a good idea of what age group your book is written for. Also, not including comp titles, or bad comp titles. Your comp titles should be fairly recent and have good sales numbers. And generally, the author should have a similar platform as you. Dear Robyn Chapman: Why would editors attend a pitch event when agents are submitting queries to them already?A pitch event is a convenient way to discover new talent, and I don't have to worry about writing rejection letters. (Writing rejection letters is one of the worst parts of the job.) I can only skim a broad range of work and only reach out to the creators I'm interested in.
