This monumental bronze koro (incense burner) features a dramatic design: a large eagle with outstretched wings crowns the pierced lid, while the bowl is supported by three muscular, semi-clad demons standing on a rugged rock base.

The smooth-bore barrel is damascened in gold and bears Arabic invocations and a Persian distych punning on the word kundak (in the senses of ‘swaddling clothes’ and ‘gun-stock’, i.e. tiny but deadly).

The mask was originally attached to a helmet by a hinge at the brow and clamps at the temples. It bears holes for the attachment of a neck-veil and ear-protectors at the sides.

A finely illuminated 16th-century manuscript of al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ by Firuzabadi has been selected as a Featured Image on Arabic Wikipedia. This is the 12th for the Khalili Collections, and 29th overall.

This 16th-17 century Talismanic coat from Turkey made in cotton, heavily starched and inscribed in black, carmine, blue, green and gold ink with plaited silk cords and tassels as a later addition.
