"26. Chessboard"

From "Hard Graft on the Half Shell" - a sequence in which each poem is grown from a graft - a line from another poet's poem (indicated by a sans serif typeface).

(graft from “Lament for the Makers of Songs” Kenneth Patchen, in "Red Wine & Yellow Hair" (New Directions, 1949))

              through the swirling flakes
     there are glimpses of mud
                                and shattered shapes
                       scattered across the valley floor

                                a white crust
                                        has already formed
                                                       and is thickening
                                            looking soft yet brittle

                    all we can hear is
the cry of the bitter snow and
the croaking of crows
that peck at the covered mounds

                                            each mound is a sculpture
                                                          formed of frozen tears
                                                       each flake a lie
                                                that no-one’s left to hear
