Thinking more on the post-convo with Nick & Janine. For Nick, I see a coach that feels he's a strong vet or two away from hoisting the cup. For Janine, I see a leader struggling with the occasions her side doesn't keep it simple and in control.
If the latter happens, the game plan works. #KCvDEN
g+ GameFlow: NWSL Regular Season Kansas City Current v Denver Summit FC on September 26, 2026. #KCvDEN ⚽️🤖
#KCvDEN, Postgame Cushing:
"Before you know it, Chawinga outruns. There's a moment to block there, you can block Chawinga's run, which delays, which then means Eva and KK can mop it up & can start to play with the coverage in behind. We don't do that, she gets a clear run & she showed her quality."
#KCvDEN, Cushing:
"I think one moment turns it to 2-1, one moment turns it to 3-1, & I think the 3rd goal is a great example of the margins, right? Really good play, we get into their box, we have two chances & when the ball breaks from their 6-yard box, we're sleepy & not focused."
#KCvDEN, Cushing:
"The way KC play, they want to try & get you in the spin dryer & the last 15 minutes of the 1st, we were in that, right? You could see no composure on clearances, no passes put together so we can almost get control of the game & stop those transition moments happening frequently."
#KCvDEN Postgame, Nick Cushing:
"First 25 minutes, I thought we controlled the game, kept the game compact, kept the game short. With the ball, had coverage all over the pitch, blocking transition runs, making sure that we had cover in behind.
#KCvDEN Postgame, Nick Cushing:
"You look at the second goal, then you look at the third goal, they're preventable. It might look super open, but they're definitely preventable."
#KCvDEN Postgame, Nick Cushing
"I watched the goals back just then. It looks so open, but it's actually not. If you look at the first goal, it's about judging the flight of the ball and not allowing somebody who's very quick to get a run on you."
#KCvDEN Postgame, Nick Cushing:
"At 2-1 we can score to make it 2-2. We don't get the coverage right on the rest defense, and next minute, Chawinga is running in, and I think today you see the pace and power that Chawinga has, and the problems that she can cause."
#KCvDEN Postgame, Nick Cushing:
"We were okay in patches. We played the game plan in patches, and I think outside of that, you can see their strength on transition."
#KCvDEN Postgame, Janine Sonis:
"We have to be humble and go back and watch this and own mistakes and have the max amount of self-accountability that we can in order to move forward from this and be able to go and put in four performances that will give us a chance."
#KCvDEN Postgame, Janine Sonis:
"There's no room for error now. We have to be at our absolute best for the next four games in order to give ourselves a chance. You don't want to be in a position where you're relying on other teams' results to put you in a place you want to be in."
#KCvDEN, Sonis on the 2nd goal:
"I don't actually know what happened. I thought it was pretty clear the ball was gonna roll through, and yeah I would assume just miscommunication on that, but when you have pace like that in the front line, teams feed off of those moments and definitely punish you."
#KCvDEN Postgame, Janine Sonis:
"...passing through them, some good moments, and obviously, I have a chance early on that I need to score, and then Lindsey scores, and it's good, but in a place like this, against a team like this, momentum can shift very quickly, and it did."
