"The grey heron is one of the most iconic and fascinating inhabitants of the banks of the Kamo River (Kamogawa), which flows through the heart of Kyoto.
Although often referred to colloquially as the "large heron" due to its imposing size, its official name is simply the "grey heron." Unlike many wild animals that flee from human presence, the grey herons of the Kamo River have become completely accustomed to city residents and travelers. They allow themselves to be observed from very close range, often remaining motionless just a few meters away from passersby walking or cycling along the riverbanks.
It is not uncommon to spot one standing statue-still in the river's current, patiently waiting for the perfect moment to spear a fish with a swift, precise strike of its beak."
