“This is an account of a fracture, a breaking away from the notion that the polite, Western liberal ever stood for anything at all.”

Aimless young adults in the 2000s, looking for purpose, facing unexpected tragedy, being silly, and coming together over the power of music. It's all pretty emo, and I think I'm too old for stories like this now, but darn it if I didn't get caught up rooting for these kids. #JustRead

The Taiga Syndrome
by Cristina Rivera Garza
Translated by Suzanne Jill Levine and Aviva Kana

What starts as a poetic noir becomes a fairy-tale horror story. A Detective encounters wolves, woodsmen, and Eraserhead-esque children.

Super cute, fun read! Relatable themes of self-acceptance, the importance of community, and living a spiritual life. I LOVED the accents in the audiobook!

Starts out with a different vibe — triumph out of tragedy, more comedy and action — but gets more melancholy as it goes along. #JustRead

Interconnected manga short stories that range from bittersweet to downright sad. A good library sale score from a number of years back. I don't think I realized this was volume 2 when I picked it up — I was just excited to find it — but it worked mostly okay starting halfway through. #JustRead

I decided that this would be the year I read Moby Dick. It's a lot! — digressive, profound, funny, obsessive, a feast of language. Sometimes difficult to penetrate, but always absorbing. #JustRead

#justread You Better Believe I’m Gonna Talk About It by Lisa Rinna

I thoroughly enjoyed this and thought it was super solid as a memoir, even as someone who has never watched an episode of ANY Real Housewives series. More thoughts in the alt text!

You Better Believe I’m Gonna Talk About It by Lisa Rinna
The New York times bestseller

I went into this read only knowing Lisa as being outspoken and for her iconic lips. She did a great job with the audiobook and it was super engaging, playful, and earnest. This was honestly a great read with nuance, interesting stories (even though I lack the Real Housewives history), thoughtful reflections on women, aging, power, and culture, as well as some solid advice and perspective!

[white background with a series of images of Lisa in a short pale blue dress with red stockings and platform shoes as well as red arm-length gloves. She Sagan’s in a few different poses with one foot kicked up and making shocked and demure expressions as she extends her arms out in different directions]

I started back in December 2025 and did one short reading block each month, so this is a momentous day to finally finish! Rating this high because this compilation of stories was so incredibly thought-provoking and each session unlocked something for me to reframe, experiment with, and reflect on. Yes, I did write a chapter in this book (20!), that was one small piece of this beautiful mosaic. I’m glad (thanks spirit team for the inspiration) that I ended up doing a whole podcast mini series on this book because of the resonant themes that emerged, sparks for research and introspection, and even tears along the way. Absolutely recommended for anyone who is spiritually curious as well as those, like myself, who already had their awakening — the guidance of these stories is still relevant because there’s always an uplevel around the corner!
