The Basement Bureau is crafting some amazing investigative pieces this semester! From the Elon and Queens merger to sexual assault at colleges to the need for student athlete mental health support, there's much learn about our community from students diving into the issues they care about. #JOU4970

As I near the end of my first investigative story, I've learned many lessons to apply to my second story, the most important one being to submit the clearest and simplest records request as early as possible and follow up... a lot! The squeaky wheel gets the grease. #JOU4970

We had a great day peer-editing our story 1 drafts in #JOU4970! I am looking forward to my interview tomorrow morning with one of the athletic trainers to strengthen my piece.

Today in class, we peer-editied each other's first drafts. A scary and vulnerable hour and 40 minutes, but a helpful and well-appreciated class period of feedback from my classmates. There's no I in Journalism! (wait...) Okay, there's no Me in Journalism :) #jou4970

You learn something new everyday... a few weeks ago, in an interview with Economics Professor, Brandon Sheridan, I learned about The Bennett Hypothesis. This theory believes that as federal aid increases, colleges raise their tuition prices in response. New angles for my story! #JOU4970

I was very excited to interview a Board of Ed. member who I remember from the election ballot just 2 years ago! The interview provided valuable insights and connected stories. One teacher's classroom in particular seems to be a source of high praise - let's hope it turns into a source! #JOU4970

What a ride it's been, from making my first records request to reaching out to everyone I know in the education realm! Learning more about how students engage with history and civics in today's society has completely changed my angle for this story, and I'm looking forward to where it goes. #JOU4970

On the eve of my rough draft being due, I'm proud of the investigative work I've done so far. I had another interview with a victim today, and am glad that their voices are being heard, especially in light of the Cornell 7 case. #jou4970

Do I feel ready? No. But writing a rough draft can show me what questions still need answered, and I'm not afraid to keep working on this project after I've gotten my grade if there's more to the story
