August JOLTS from BLS, out Sept 29:

Job openings rate: 4.3%, down from 4.4% in July
Quits rate: 1.9%, unchanged

For scale: openings averaged 4.5% in 2019 and 6.9% at the 2022 peak. Quits at 1.9% sit below every annual average from 2015 to 2025.

The hire rate for Aug 2026 at 3.3%, up from 3.2% in the prior month. JOLTS defines Hires as all additions to the payroll during the month #jolts #econsky

JOLTS update: The quits rate for Aug 2026 came in at 1.9%, down by 0p.p. from prior month. Job quits measure voluntary separations by employees (retirements are reported as other separations) #jolts #econsky

Today's JOLTS update suggest that 3.1M people quit their job in Aug 2026, down from 3.1in the prior month. Quits are voluntary separations initiated by the employee, and can proxy willingness or ability to leave jobs. #JOLTS #econsky

Ever-so-slight improvement in August #JOLTS report with higher hires, lower layoffs:
-Hires rate up slightly to 3.3% from 3.2% in July
-Quits rate flat at 1.9%
-Job openings fell to 7.08m from 7.34m
-Layoffs fell to 1.64m from 1.7m

Labor demand in Oregon continued to cool in 2024, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Job Opening and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) program.
