108 years ago today. The troopship HMS Otranto sank off Islay with the loss of 431 lives on 6 October 1918. Her loss, and that of S.S. Tuscania on 5 February 1918 with 260 deaths, is marked by the poignant American Monument on Islay. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

The American Monument on Islay. The image shows a view slightly uphill to a tall almost cylindrical monument placed on the highest part of the surrounding landscape. It is made of grey and reddish stone and has bands of lighter stone with blind window openings at high level. There are two men, looking very small against it, standing to the right of the monument.
