I also feel that if I am going to be putting this much effort into setting up #emacs, I can't be running just Debian Linux with KDE like a normie (I moved away from Arch after I got freaked out by the AUR attacks), but rather I need to go full wingnut and run #GNU #Hurd or at least #BSD.
