We don't always stay where we are valued.
Sometimes we stay where we know exactly how to be valuable.
Familiarity can feel a lot like belonging.

MONDAY — HUMAN EXPERIENCE

WHERE WE KNOW HOW TO BE VALUABLE

Some of the places we stay in are not the ones that see us best. They’re the ones we’ve learned to navigate best.

We don't always stay where we are valued.

Sometimes we stay where we know exactly how to be valuable.

From the inside, the two can feel almost identical.

Being valued is something other people give you. Knowing how to be valuable is something you learn: which need to anticipate, which mood to read before the room fills, which small problem to fix quietly before anyone notices it existed.

After enough time, that ability can stop feeling like something you do and start feeling like who you are.

That is what makes leaving difficult.

A place where you're good at being useful gives you something a new place cannot: familiarity. You already know the rules. You know what is expected. You know where you fit.
Starting again means being uncertain again.

And sometimes, we would rather be useful than unsure.

So we call it loyalty. Commitment. Timing.

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it is simply the safest version of ourselves, still being rewarded for showing up in a place we already know how to navigate.

Not every long stay is a mistake.

But the comfort of being good at something can sometimes feel remarkably like the comfort of being home.

Too much data can lead to analysis paralysis. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut. And don’t underestimate it, many times those gut decisions result in unique solutions.
