Some theorize that the Yasaka clan, an immigrant family from the mainland known for their skill in horse breeding, founded Hōkan-ji (法観寺) as a worship site in 588.
In 657 this same family would establish Kanshin-in (感神院), forerunner of Yasaka-jinja.
