Here is a 40 min conversation between Martin Hairer and Tom Crawford (@TomRocksMaths.bsky.social) on AI and Mathematics which digs into more detail. youtu.be/G8HMa_tgM34 #HLF26

❔ AI can be extremely useful, but can we make it safe for us humans?

🤖 Last week, at the Spark Session at #HLF26, Torsten Hoefler and Jacob Tsimerman approached that possibility from opposite directions.

We were also very proud to be part of an #hlf26 panel on "Careers in Academia, Industry, Start-Ups, and Beyond"!

Good advice by Gilles Brassard to the young researchers at #HLF26 .

I think the citation by A. Einstein would have fitted well into the AI panel earlier on.

Slide with various items of advice on how to pick a research topic.

Obviously, the recent announcement by #OpenAI about solving the Navier-Stokes Problem has been looming over the panel discussion on "AI in Mathematical Research" at #HLF26 .
If such hard problems can be solved by AI, will the focus shift towards finding those hard, interesting, valuable … problems?

Stage with panelists.

A strong EMS presence at #HLF26 in Heidelberg this week. We wish all laureates and young researchers a rewarding week of exchange and new connections.

The 13th Heidelberg Laureate Forum is underway! #HLF26

Representing the EMS in Heidelberg: Apostolos Damialis, Helge Holden, Jorge Buescu & Alain Valette.

A selection of EMS books is also on display and will go to young researchers at the end of the Forum. 📚

At #HLF26 , Shayan Oveis Gharan (Abacus Medal in 2026) showed this slide. The -10**(-36) improvement caused quite some smiles in the audience. Sometimes the qualitative improvements outweigh the quantitative ones by leading the way towards further progress.

The slide mentions 2 approximation algorithms for the metric traveling salesman problem. Algorithm 1 guarantees a solution that is 1.5 times the optimum in its worst case. Algorithm 2 improves this to factor 1.5 - 10**(-36).

Yu Deng, another of this year's Fields Medallists, talked in the same #hlf26 session as Tsimerman, about critical problems in statistical #physics and PDEs. Some very impressive #maths that also applies to one of Hilbert's problems plus.maths.org/icm-2026-fm-1

Really enjoyed Jacob Tsimerman's talk at the #hlf26 this morning! He talked about #AI and #maths, the topic on everyone's mind. If you'd like to find out what #maths he won the Fields Medal for, see our article from the #ICM26 plus.maths.org/icm-2026-fm-4

Got my first nerdy sticker at #HLF26 :-)

Many sessions are live streamed. Have a look at the programme: www.heidelberg-laureate-forum.org/forum/13th-h...

The sticker says "P ≠ NP (probably)".
