A black-and-white ink and wash illustration portrays a bizarre, lanky hillbilly creature from roughly the waist up against a mostly white background. His enormous head dominates the image, framed by a battered, floppy-brimmed hat patched, torn, and crudely held together with visible stitches and fasteners. Two wildly mismatched, bulging eyes stare forward beneath thick, unruly brows. One pupil sits near the center while the other eye appears slightly misaligned, giving him a startled, vacant expression. A long, narrow nose ends in pronounced nostrils above an uneven mouth with thick lips and several crooked, widely spaced teeth. Large ears jut from either side of his head, and thin strands of scraggly hair hang around his face and neck. His extremely long neck descends into a worn plaid shirt with rolled, ragged sleeves and suspenders. Fine crosshatching, loose scratchy lines, gray watercolor washes, wrinkles, patches, and distressed fabric textures give the character a handmade grotesque quality. At lower left, several stalks of corn rise beside him, including a clearly visible ear of corn with curling, dried leaves. The sparse background and monochrome palette keep attention firmly on the exaggerated rural monster and his wonderfully bewildered expression.
