When I saw the reveal trailer for HELL IS US during a PlayStation State of Play, I was immediately enthralled, but I let middling reviews cloud my judgment and it put me off paying full price for it. However, it recently became available via the PS+ Extra tier, so I took the plunge because if the game did disappoint, all it would have cost me was a few hours of my time. From the moment I started playing, the game drew me in with the awesome visuals and tone from the outset. You play as Rémi Letam, an Organized Nations (the in-game equivalent of the UN) who goes AWOL so he can venture into Hadea, a country ripped apart by a brutal civil war. One of the game's strengths is that there is no hand-holding, no in-game map, no markers, no waypoints, and no guidance outside of the items you find or the NPCs you encounter in the world. The story unfolds at the perfect pace, with the lore of the world opening up the more you explore. Meeting NPCs and taking literal notes of what they say for where to go or what items they need is an integral gameplay element that is genuinely fun to do. Solving puzzles you find in the various locations is satisfying and while there is backtracking required, it never feels forced or superfluous. Another awesome feature is the enemies, called Hollow Walkers. Their design is both basic and intriguingly complex, with emotional states being a foundation of their overall existence. Discovering the history of these creatures, coupled with learning how to approach them to take them down is just the right level of difficulty curve. When you venture back later in the game you will have learned the skills to overcome them without much trouble. The combat also appears basic with the light and heavy attacks, but there is much more complex system underneath, with different weapons, attachments for the weapons, your drone, attachments for your drone, along with various consumables.
