A dark Gothic interior shows a tall, human-like figure standing slightly right of center in front of a stained, cracked plaster wall. The figure is completely draped in layers of ragged black fabric and lace that fall from the head to the dusty floor, obscuring nearly the entire body. Through the translucent black veil, a pale face with deep-set shadowed eyes stares directly forward. One thin hand hangs at the figure’s side, while the other rests on the upper edge of a framed portrait held vertically beside the body. The portrait depicts a pale young girl with long dark hair. Behind the figure, six ornate antique frames of different sizes hang irregularly across the wall. Each contains a somber portrait of a different person, including elderly men and women, children, and a striking red-haired young woman with dark-rimmed eyes. An old upholstered settee stretches across the lower left side of the room. Muted brown, gray, black, and sepia tones, distressed surfaces, dim illumination, and heavy shadows give the scene the appearance of an abandoned Victorian mourning room.
