Unceremoniously, he was pushed over the threshold and into the void, and the door shut quickly behind him before he could right himself.

What happens now?

There was a bitter taste in his mouth, and he waited.

Fortunately, he didn't need to wait long. Something hummed to life - another dim light above him. His eyes roved. A clear xenonite barrier closed the space around him, measuring roughly fifteen by twenty feet. Within sat only a clean, flat cot on the hard floor. The ceiling had what looked to have sliding panels affixed in it, and the metal wall behind him housed two doors - the heavy-duty one he'd just entered from, and a wooden one with a handle. A small rectangular panel not unlike a mail slot sat equidistant between them at waist-height. He took a slow step toward the wooden door before he was interrupted by light from the other side of the xenonite.

As his eyes adjusted, he was met with the visage of Ava Volkov.

HALF HUMAN fanfic by Dracononite

In 2225, Earth scientists intercept an asteroid projected to have originated near the 40 Eridani A solar system, discovering an alien virus which drastically transforms human biology upon contact. Realization, an extremist underground science research group, gets their hands on the virus to use on one unfortunate Dr. Ryland Grace.

Many years earlier, a mysterious iron-rich ocean with microscopic alien life was discovered on Mars' new third moon, AT-5. Simon, a former Eden engineer, is one of a group deemed responsible by the Consolidation of Iron for the destruction of Filament Station. Shipped back to Earth as a convict, he's set to endure the torturous effects of this "blood ocean's" parasite in Realization as penance for his crimes.

Notes: This AU has been in the works for weeks and is all I can think about. Enough so that I've taken up my first writing project in a decade. This is my first time posting anything on Ao3, so any suggestions for tags would be appreciated (I'll add more as I think of them and as the story progresses!) Also, I'm not a fast writer, but I'm a passionate one. Comments and questions fuel me.
