Unforgiven

Haida Gwaii: Rugged, remote, relentless. The Pesuta, a casualty of Hecate Strait #BlueSkyArtShow #Weather #Scape

Tlell, British Columbia 🇨🇦

The bow of a shipwreck with a broken wooden hull and rusting metal stacks: Laying on a sandy beach. There are dark, blue-grey skies and heavy rain coming in at an angle. It's working up to a squall, a test of the power of Gore-Tex versus nature.

The stunning remains of this wreck sit on a pebbled beach with a backdrop of rainforests. We're looking past the remnants of the bow, through driving rain into the Hecate Strait, the notoriously rough waters that drove the 264-foot log barge aground during a winter storm in 1928.

On this day we were to take a day long zodiac ride to SGang Gwaay UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Historic Site: Cancelled due to rough seas. It makes me wonder why I thought this trail was a good idea. I guess I wanted to test my raingear. We came back on the following day to hike in the sunshine, which felt like it was a completely different place. The Pesuta Shipwreck Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails on Haida Gwaii.

An eagle peers down from a large cedar tree to what lies below. Is it lunch, or an intruder?

A year ago today. Setting sail early across to Alliford Bay on the glass like North Pacific Ocean. Aiming for the small gap towards the right in the line of small rocky points. Heading for Sandspit Harbour, #HaidaGwaii

Balance Rock and the trail closes to Haida House (#HaidaGwaii, Sept. 2019, iPhone 13s).

A people who survived both the rigors of life on this northern island and “human predation” deserves attention.
