@jesshebert.bsky.socialI hope this has been a helpful dive into something that commonly affects and can break our communities and friend groups, especially under the great geekdom umbrella. My unending thanks to Michael Suileabhain-Wilson for originating, and happy to keep having #GSF conversations! ❤️
@jesshebert.bsky.socialAnother multi #GSF example: a creator has done awful things and their fans get divided: do we shun the art, the artist, both, neither? Fans that choose one option may be cut off from others who think they are criticizing their choice or their Fake Celebrity Bestie.
@jesshebert.bsky.socialSolution: depends. If the friendship means a lot to you, you can try to be direct. There's a chance he'll take it as the sign to make changes. He may take it as criticism (especially if he's a GSF2) and blow up, and you lose the friendship, but the friendship wasn't sustainable as it was. #GSF
@jesshebert.bsky.socialCurrently, in FB Drama Land, we have multiple kinds of #GSF in interacting with a celebrity and their team. GSF4 is the most prevalent here, folks assuming they are Besties with celebrity because they follow them on Snapchat or met them at an event.
@jesshebert.bsky.socialGSF #1: "Ostracizers are evil." Nobody likes being excluded, and geeks will rally for inclusion more often than not. However, it means geeks are more likely to put up with bad behavior, no matter how harmful, uncomfortable, or unacceptable it would be in other groups with social norms. #GSF
@jesshebert.bsky.socialThe Geek Social Fallacies were initially outlined by Plausibly Deniable more than two decades ago, and they hold up. If you're not familiar, well, I'm gonna briefly thread because it's an important moment in nerd lore. #GSF
