Happy Birthday Rin Tin Tin! (Approximate date.) Acclaimed 1920s movie star. Rescued in the rubble of a village abandoned by the retreating Germans during the Saint-Mihiel Offensive. Nursed to health by his new master, he returned with him to the US and became a Hollywood legend.

Italy follows up recent progress with attacks to extend the Gorizia bridgehead. Night attacks and brutal fighting allow the Italians to seize vital trenches just a few kilometers from Trieste. Austria-Hungary will shorten their lines along Mount Santo and the Hermada Hills.

"La Martyre" - and I'm sorry but I don't know the artist. It clearly dates from the First World War - there's a German helmet on the piano and that appears to be a Red Cross nurse lying dead beside the enthusiastically performing Death.

111 years on from the first day of the battle of Loos.

10 men from Arbroath were killed that day. This puts it second only to Aubers Ridge as the towns costliest day of the Great War.
