A Great Crested Grebe swimming, creating ripples on calm grey/blue water. The bird faces to the left. The Grebe has a elegant streamlined shape - it has a mixture of brown and black plumage on its body while its long S shaped neck is cream at the front and black on the back. It has black and chestnut plumes on its throat and cheek, a cream coloured face, and its black crest lies flat across the top of its head. The Grebe has a dark eye and a long, pointed, dark coloured beak. The reflection of its head and neck shimmers in the water beneath it.

A great crested grebe chick has a bare patch of skin on its crown that flushes hot scarlet the hungrier it gets. Feed it and the red drains away within minutes. A living fuel gauge.
