A vertically composed painting shows three kittens huddled beneath an old, decaying wooden porch or crawlspace opening. The largest kitten sits in the upper center, its black-and-white face emerging dramatically from deep darkness. Enormous golden-yellow eyes with narrow vertical pupils dominate its expression, while tall pointed ears rise toward thick white cobwebs stretched across both upper corners. Below, two smaller kittens sit close together behind rough, crossed wooden slats. The kitten on the left has pale orange and cream fur and oversized icy blue-gray eyes. The kitten on the right is dark gray and white with round amber eyes and a tiny pink nose. All three stare directly outward with startled, almost storybook expressions. Tangled dried vines, seed pods, delicate spiderwebs, and wiry black stems creep around the distressed wooden frame. Thick, tactile brushwork covers the scene, with scraped beige, brown, black, gray, muted red, and touches of gold creating the appearance of an aged, heavily worked painting. The surrounding darkness makes the kittens seem sheltered, trapped, or cautiously watching from their hidden refuge.
