Title page: a blue jay sits in on a branch overlooking a school playground. The boys - Beat, Ruckus, and Jay are playing keep-away with a ball while Jingles stands off to the side and stares at the school building in the background. The girls, Lava and Bini, are nearby. Bini walks up to Jingles, “What’s wrong?” She looks genuinely concerned. Jingles is taken a little off-guard as he says, “Uh. Nothing.”

Jay runs up to his side with a ball under his arm, “C’mon, Jingles, let’s play keep away!”

Jingles perks up, “Oh! There he is! Hey! Whoo...?” Jingles calls to Whoo, who is walking alongside his teacher with a paper in hand.

Whoo glances over with a sad look. His teacher is ushering him along. “Oof. Tough deal," says Bini. “What?” Jingles asks.

Whoo sits at a bench on the side of the school building, leaning on his elbow, while the others talk from the distance. “Looks like he’s in trouble. Probably missing homework?” Bini says.

Jingles is desperate, “W-Well, Maybe I can help him?”

Jay and the girls run to catch Jingles, “No! No! don’t do it!”

Back to Jingles and the girls. Jay puts his hand on Jingles’ shoulder, “Seriously. His teacher’s such a hard-ass.” Jingles looks back, “Really?”

Title page, First Spring. It’s a little chilly and rainy. Jingles, now around 9 years old, is standing in a school hallway holding a dripping closed umbrella while looking at a yellow piece of paper in his hand. His hair is a little longer and tied back a little. Kids are walking into classrooms and teachers are waiting in doorways in the background, greeting their new students. There are welcome signs on some classroom doors. It is the first day of his fourth year in primary school.

Jingles has lowered the paper, which has a printed map to his new classroom on it. Before him is a door in front of him. The sign on it reads "Welcome. 401" in Ishak (the Ishanni language).

Jingles enters a new classroom. "Yo, Jingles!" calls a familiar voice.

Jingles sees many familiar faces beckoning him over. There’s Jay, Ruckus, and Beat waiting for him with an open seat. They all have slightly longer hair, the same age as Jingles.

Jingles waves to them as he heads over to their table, "Oh, hey guys!" The classroom is populated by students sitting in small groups at big round tables.

Jingles joins the boys with a big smile. Jay beams at him, chin resting innocently on his laced fingers, “Ayy, you’re in this class too?”

"Yeah!" Jingles sits down, already seeing the devious smile on Jay’s face, “Don’t get any funny ideas.”

BIRD BOYS! CHAPTER 9
SIBLING RIVALRY

Jingles is sitting doing homework at the bar of a kitchen in a nice and neatly-decorated house while his mom Eela, a scrub jay woman with blue feathers and a dark mask around her eyes, wearing a collared business suit, sips a cup of tea and reads the newspaper. Jingles has his head turned back towards the front entrance of the house, which can be seen from an archway connecting the sitting room with the foyer.

Eela lowers the newspaper to look at Jingles, her eyebrow raised subtly.

Jingles is still looking back at the door, but is startled when she clears her throat.

Jingles promptly gets back on task, though he's still looking to the side.

Eela continues to sips her tea while watching him. She checks the watch on her wrist, which reads 3:30pm.

Knock Knock

Jingles leaps from his seat, "I'll get it!" Eela is startled.

Jingles runs to the front door, but who could it be?

Two Steller's jays chatter on a branch that overlooks the front entrance of the school where Ruckus and Beat are waiting in their usual spot.

Beat and Ruckus stand side by side, bored and straight-faced as Dis is once again very, very late.

Ruckus looks left, then right, and seeing nobody, turns back to Beat, conveying his lack of surprise. Beat's mouth is flat and unsmiling.

"Hey Beat," says Ruckus, breaking the silence. "See that cool bird over there?"

"Over where?" Beat says, staring across the street at nothing but trees and an overlook of some distant houses and buildings in the Downtown Westcliffs.

"I seen it," Ruckus points very intentionally at the Downtown Westcliffs, "that way."

Beat gazes with his hand shielding his glasses from the sun. "I don't see it..."

"Guess we gotta get closer," Ruckus smiles with an exaggerated shrug. Now Beat has started to pick up what he's putting down.

The chapter opens with a darkened classroom with the final image of “Mind Your Mist pt. 1” projected on a screen. Kids are sitting while their teacher says, “If there are no more questions, lets have a break.”

Kids start getting up from their seats and the lights turn on. “And don't forget to Mind Your Mist!” the teacher adds.

The kids start filing out of the classroom. Jingles squints at the light as he emerges outside. “Hey Jingles!” a voice calls.

Ruckus and Jay are standing side by side as Ruckus waves to Jingles and calls, “Wanna play Falcons and Field Mice?”

"Sure, but who's gonna be the falcon?" Jingles asks.

"YOU ARE!" Ruckus smacks his arm and darts away. Both he and Jay scatter, leaving Beat standing nearby.

Beat makes eye-contact with Jingles, then offers a devious look, to which Jingles responds with a nod.

Ruckus cackles as he climbs up a tree. He hikes himself up on the highest branch he can reach and sits high and mighty thinking nobody can touch him.

"Heh. Not gonna get me up here." Ruckus says to himself--only for his eyes to suddenly pop wide in surprise.

Jay is sitting with his feet up on a desk in a detention room. In the room are other kids who are sitting strategically separated and in varying states of boredom. An adult from off-panel shouts at him, "Feet down, Jay!"

Jay does so, the pencil he'd been balancing on his nose landing on the desk with a chK-CHK. His eyes then shift toward a new kid entering the classroom.

Jay is watching the new kid, who can be identified as Wizzy, with mute curiosity. Wizzy takes a seat at the desk next to Jay's, and Jay can't help but notice him. Jay then tries to get Wizzy's attention, "Pst."

Wizzy glances at Jay, but he only returns a sour expression.

“Whatchu in for?” Jay whispers.

“What do you care?” Wizzy growls, but this prompts the adult staff member to loudly shush them.

Jay looks away briefly, only to start turning his body toward the new kid again.

Jay nods slowly leans back into frame, his lips stretching comically long to reach Wizzy's ear. "Wanna know what I di--"

“What?” Wizzy blurts.

Jay whispers it to Wizzy, who winces in surprise, “Dude…”

Jay smirks, “You?”

Wizzy slowly inhales as he gathers his thoughts...

Bird Boys! Chapter 4: Show and Tell

A magpie sits on electric wiring overlooking a tall building in a dingy city. There is an explosion - BOOM! - and two bird men shrouded in shadow around a corner, shielded from the explosion.

a blue jay man looks around the corner while his magpie partner hangs back. Then the jay motions at him to follow

The two of them head into the blasted doorway once the smoke clears, into a dark night club illuminated with sinister red lighting. Their guns are drawn as they investigate the area.

The magpie, named "Trick", a dark-eyed bird man with magpie feathers and wings in what looks like a casual suit, is scanning a dark nightclub with his gun aimed downward.

Trick looks over his shoulder at his partner, Blue, who is calling him from across the room by an open door near a stage. "Ay, Trick..." Blue beckons him.

A very young Ruckus, about 6 years old, is riding piggy-back on his older sister Dis, about 13 years old and "manifested" (has wings and bird features). She lands with big black boots in a puddle, making a big SPLASH. Ruckus is kicking his feet with excitement, "YAAY!!"

Dis almost trips, landing with a huge stomp on her other foot. Her wings are blue and gray, like that of Steller's jay. Ruckus goads, "Again! Do it again!" Dis replies, "Ough. Man, I almost BEEFED it!"

Ruckus is patting her head while repeating, "Do it! Do it! DO IT!"

Dis looks ahead at another big puddle. "Ugh, fine, GODS, yer so ANNOYING."

Dis takes a running start.

She leaps...

...and...

WHOOOSH!! They land with a massive splash.

A lively classroom of 3rd grade level kids (roughly 8-9 years old) with a billowy ceiling and flower-like light fixtures hanging, windows along the back wall, simple bulletin board and shelf shapes behind round tables of children doing various things like talking, walking around, reading, and doing class work. In the foreground is a bird woman with glasses and large wings looking down at a child asking her a question. Eva appears to be reading at a table in the midground. Another boy sits at a far back table, confronted by two girls.

"But you're BOTH my best friends," says the boy at the back table.

"NOPE!" Lava, a tall girl with long hair in drooping pigtails and baggy T-shirt, replies with her finger pointed sternly in the air. "You have to pick one."

"Why?" The boy counters.

Bini, a dark-skinned girl with fluffy dark hair, wearing sweater, adds, "'Cause 'best' means the best."

"That's stupid."

"HAH!" Lava interjects, gesturing to herself, "He called you stupid! That means I'M the best friend!" Bini has her arms folded in a pout.

But the boy says, "That's not what I meant."

The boy, here on referred to as Wizzy, has his hands up in defense, sweating. Bini is smirking while Lava has her hands on her hips yelling, "GASP! What? I'm NOT the best friend?" Wizzy says, "I didn't say that!"

Bini slams her hands on the table, leaning toward Wizzy and says, "C'mon, Wizzy, you gotta PICK!!"

Wizzy obstinately yells, "I DON'T WANNA AN' YOU CAN'T MAKE ME!"

A dark-haired boy with light skin wearing a green shirt, brown pants, yellow sandals, and a backpack with a bell hanging from it. He is walking down a beaten path in a residential area with wood fences. Lots of shrubs, a slightly obscured building to the left. It is afternoon.

The boy, named Eva, is walking calmly, and the bell on his backpack is jingling with each step he takes.

From behind, two mean-looking kids approach, eyeing his backpack. He is taken by surprise as the first mean kid rips the bell right off the backpack.

Eva’s head is turning in confusion as he yells, “Hey!”

The second mean kid's feet trip Eva.

Eva falls to the ground on hands and knees, backpack askew, with a THOOMP!

The first mean kid throws the bell over some nearby hedges. Eva looks on in dismay.

He then watches the two mean boys walk off, snarking "So annoying..." "Stupid kid." Eva is tearing up.
