Our dramatic black-and-white photograph captures the shoreline of a lake at Glendalough in County Wicklow, Ireland, surrounded by steep, rugged mountains.

The lake stretches from the foreground towards a narrow valley in the distance. Its surface is gently rippled, reflecting the muted light of the overcast sky.

Several dark silhouettes of ducks swim close to the shoreline, their movements creating delicate trails across the water.

The immediate shoreline is dark and textured, with wet sand and small stones curving gently into the lake.

On both sides, steep mountain slopes rise dramatically from the water, their lower sections covered in dense, almost black woodland.

The mountains gradually fade into mist as they converge towards the centre of the image, creating a strong sense of depth and distance.

Above the valley hangs a large, soft-edged bank of mist or cloud, partially obscuring the mountains.

The bright, almost white sky contrasts strongly with the dark landscape below. At the very top of the image, the silhouetted branches of a tree extend across the frame, forming a natural canopy.

The monochrome treatment gives the scene a quiet, atmospheric and almost timeless quality, emphasising the contrast between the pale mist, dark mountains and gently moving water.

It conveys the peaceful solitude and wild beauty of Glendalough on a still, misty day.

Finally, our picture today is finished with a simple white border frame.

The Glendalough monastic site was founded by St. Kevin in the early 6th century in Ireland. It is now in ruins, but a must-see in Ireland. We tell you what you see during a self-guided tour of the site. #Glendalough #Ireland backpackandsnorkel.c...
