Born in 1744, James McGill, but emegrated to North America soon after graduating from Glasgow University. By 1766, he had ended up in Montreal, where he became a trader and merchant, and then a politician.

Good morning, Glasgow. It's a lovely early autumn start to the day here in Kelvingrove Park, with blue skies and the trees just starting to turn - and a pesky crow with rather impeccable timing which insisted on photobombing my picture!

Glasgow University's Bower Building. Also known as the Botany Building, it was constructed in 1900 and features Scots Renaissance and Scots Baronial details designed by John James Burnet with J. Oldrid Scott.

However, the first record of this particular sculpture seems to be from the 1850s at the second observatory on Horselethill in the Dowanhill area of Glasgow.

The symbol is used as the emblem of the Astromony and Astrophysics group in the university's School of Physics and Astronomy, and may date back to the creation of University's first observatory in 1757.

An Ouroboros, an ancient symbol of eternity consisting of a snake eating its own tail, surrounding a triangle enclosing a six-pointed star on Glasgow University's Kelvin Building, which was built in 1954 and named in honour of Lord Kelvin.

This is a beautiful little detail on the door of Glasgow University's Graham Kerr Building. Designed by J.J.Burnet and built in the 1920s, it was originally constructed as the Zoology Building.
