❄️ How can we better understand the floods hidden beneath glaciers?
Dr Thomas Zwinger from CSC, the Finnish Supercomputing Center, explains how Elmer/Ice, a ChEESE code, helps researchers simulate glacial hazards.

Antarctica Gained 695 Billion Tons of Ice: Shocking Truth
Between 2021 and 2023 the Antarctic Ice Sheet reversed two decades of measured decline, gaining mass at roughly 108 billion tonnes per year — a cumulative surplus widely reported...
The part we'd rather you heard from us.
An earlier version of this page claimed a precursor at Chamoli. We audited it,
traced the signal to an M6.0 in Mindanao 28 min before the collapse, and
withdrew it. It's on the page.
No node is on a mountain yet.
A 30-day near-field scan around Bondo — absolute reference, teleseism-masked,
day-binned — found no precursor build-up at 23 km.
That is a null result and we published it.
Precursor detection is a research question. Our product is detect-and-route.
Our first Bondo geolocation assumed constant velocity and landed 8.4 km from
the origin.
Swapping in an ak135 1-D velocity model took it to 6.5 km.
Same waveforms, same stations. The model was the error.
Bondo 2017, Piz Cengalo: SNR 95 in the 2–8 Hz band at 32 km from the collapse.
Blatten 2025, Birch glacier: SNR 3.3 at 11 km.
Near-field, an ice-rock collapse is not a subtle signal. The hard part is what
you do in the next 60 seconds.
We’re pleased to be attending the International Glaciological Society British Branch (IGSBB) 2026 Conference at the University of Aberdeen this week. If you’re attending, come and say hello! 👋

We published a result, audited it ourselves, and withdrew it.
Our site reported a minutes-ahead seismic precursor at Chamoli. Our own audit
traced that signal to an M6.0 in Mindanao, 28 min before the collapse.
The retraction is on the page.
Our nodes never send a location. They send arrival times, and the server
triangulates.
Three or more stations: a triangulated fix, arrival times shown. Fewer:
labelled a baseline, never dressed up as a fix.
Enforced by an acceptance test.
