🏔️ Next EPSP Connects Virtual Science Talk: Michael Robinson (UNR) on how ridgelines record erosion rate up to a threshold slope!

📅 Oct 14 · 11:00 ET / 08:00 PT
Pre-register: bit.ly/EPSP_OCT26

#EPSPConnects #AGUEPSP #Geomorphology

Wide flyer on a dark blue background with faint topographic contour lines. Header: “AGU EPSP Connects Virtual Science Talk.” A circular photo outlined in yellow shows Michael Robinson, a smiling man with glasses and a backpack in front of cloudy mountains. Below, his name and talk title appear in yellow: “Ridgelines record erosion rate up to a threshold slope.”

On the right, the abstract: Ridgelines, the along-ridgetop profiles of drainage divides, occur on almost every landscape on Earth and other rocky planets but have received little study. Geomorphologists have long used rivers, hillslopes, and hilltops to infer tectonic and climatic history, but this approach hasn’t been applied to ridgelines. The talk develops a theoretical framework for ridgeline morphology and tests it against analog experiments and natural landscapes. Results show that below a threshold uplift rate near 1 mm/yr, area-normalized ridgeline slope steepens with increasing uplift. The transition from fluvial to debris-flow dominated channel networks causes this threshold.

An orange banner at the bottom reads “Pre-registration required. Sign up here!” with a QR code and the link bit.ly/EPSP_OCT26. Date: Oct 14th, 2026, at 08:00 San Francisco, 11:00 New York, 17:00 Berlin, 20:30 New Delhi, and 23:00 Beijing. Bio: Michael Robinson is a hydrology PhD student at the University of Nevada, Reno, working with Professor Joel Scheingross. He uses high-resolution topography to study drainage divide migration, river branching, and ridgeline evolution, and uses flume experiments to study autogenic waterfall formation. He was previously a hydrologist at the USGS Arizona Water Science Center. He will start as a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley in late 2026.

Eroded bentonite in the rain

A highly eroded layer of bentonite clay forms deeply incised valley shapes off a “ridge top” that is divided into three parts. At the bottom of the frame is a small rivulet of water carrying clay particles that have eroded off the clay. The shape is very organic looking with rounded edges and deep crevasses.

✨Editor's Pick✨

In a new study, Khan et al. find unequivocal statistical evidence that wild animal agents substantially change geomorphic properties, on average by 136% in freshwaters and 66% in terrestrial ecosystems.
