Here's wishing that the big lead of #graphite over #gadolinite is due to a botnet infestation and not because graphite has so many uses.

I want Gadolinite to win 🥲 TIL that it breaks down over time due to frequent presence of radioactive elements within the lattice.

#Gadolinite-(Y) goes so hard and gets you so many elements for your money!

@chukg.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 5:00 PM

only about 6 hours left in #MinCup26 Round 2, Match 8. #Gadolinite has so many elements in it!

@corgiseveryhour.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 4:10 PM

Hmmmmm Rare Earth vs Common Lubricant. I like both of them but the crystals on #gadolinite are pretty darn cool. Plus Yttrium?! Sorry #graphite

#MinCup26 Round 2 Match 8:
It's a G-day to end Round 2 as the alphabet soup of rare earth elements in #Gadolinite-(Y) goes against native elements #Graphite.

We're up to match 8 of round 2 #MinCup26 - and it's #Gadolinite-(Y) taking on the very useful #Graphite. Easy pick for me is the lovely mosaic-like structure of #Gadolinite-(Y) (and variety of elements!).

There are also a number of other exotic elements that substitue into the yittrum postions (Neodynium, gadolium, dyprosium, europium and samearium). The structure is viewed down its c-axis, and is drawn in VESTA from entry #960 in the American mineralogist database.Image representing the crystal structure of graphite with brown spheres representing carbon atoms. The laser choice is #Gadolinite, which contains erbium, neodymium, and ytterbium (among other rare earth elements), all important in laser making.

Not that people DO get these laser materials from gadolinite as far as I can tell but at least you could, and that's better than riebeckite.

This is a #teampoison toss up, with blue asbestos on the one hand and heavy metal heavy (many times radioactive) hitter on the other.

I think im going with #gadolinite

@ougeolsoc.bsky.socialSep 14, 2026, 11:37 AM

I thought the #Gadolinite was in fancy dress as obsidian! But now I will think of #Riebeckite every time I watch the roaring game aka curling! Ailsa Craig granite #ailsite... so that's where my #MinCup26 vote is going today

Since my work includes a lot of research on lanthandide oxides, which can be excellent oxide ion and proton conductors at higher temperatures, my vote goes to #Gadolinite in this round. #MinCup26

Pick your poison — mesothelioma-causing blue asbestos or the weakly radioactive gadolinite?

Hmm, tonight I’ll go with the crystal form of #gadolinite. Check this out:

@chukg.bsky.socialSep 14, 2026, 2:09 AM

Got to pick #Gadolinite-(Y) in today's #MinCup26 round -- riebeckite has asbestos in it and they had to close part of my work building for 2 years for asbestos remediation.

@warriorchicken.meSep 14, 2026, 2:01 AM

My vote goes to #Gadolinite-(Y) because “cerium, lanthanum, erbium, terbium, yttrium, ytterbium, holmium, thulium, scandium, praseodymium, neodymium and dysprosium” reminds me of Tom Lehrer

I’m really letting down Team Poison this year, but I have to vote for #Gadolinite because it was discovered by a Finn 🇫🇮

I voted #Gadolinite-(Y), but the results say that there are zero votes for this >0 mineral! :D

@crystallised-cricket.comSep 14, 2026, 12:20 AM

Both of todays #MinCup26 minerals' structures do plot out very nicely - #Gadolinite-(Y) has lots of interesting elements sneaking into the structure, but I have to say that the good old amphibole (double chain silicate) structure (with nice variation) of #Riebeckite turned my head today.

Red spheres represent oxygen atoms, blue spheres/polygons silicon atoms, yellow spheres/polygons represent sodium atoms, green spheres/polygons represent litium atoms and brown spheres/polygons represent iron atoms. There are also a number of other elements that substitute into the sodium (potassium and calcium) and lithium positions (manganese). The structure is viewed down its c-axis, and is drawn in VESTA from entry #5155 in the American mineralogist database.Image representing the crystal structure of Gadolinite-(Y). In this #MinCup26 round, I'm on team #Gadolinite! Even a classic rare-earth mineral family still has new crystal chemistry to reveal, as reported by Chukanov in @actacrystb.iucr.org with a gadolinite-(Y) analogue dominated by both hydroxyl and iron. journals.iucr.org/b/issues/201...
