Saffron corm rot, caused by #Fusarium oxysporum, has become a devastating threat to saffron cultivation in Shangri-La, China. Findings from Mingjia Wen et al. reveal the #rhizosphere ecological mechanism underlying corm rot progression: https://doi.org/10.1094/PDIS-07-25-1456-RE

Hainan, China has experienced widespread foliar diseases in its durian orchards. Field surveys conducted between October 2023 and October 2024 and molecular analysis led Huan Xu et al. to identify six causal #Fusarium species: https://doi.org/10.1094/PDIS-01-26-0070-SC

UUC, uninoculated-untreated control; H, heading; 10A, 10% anthesis; 80A, 80% anthesis; 6DA50A, 6 days after 50% anthesis; and IUC, inoculated-untreated control. The dots indicate the means, and the horizontal bars indicate the asymptotic lower and higher confidence limits. Means with different letters are significantly different at P < 0.05.

Screening sweetpotato for #Fusarium wilt resistance can be time and resource intensive. Ajay Dhungana et al. identified a marker associated with resistance that could help accelerate selection in breeding programs: https://doi.org/10.1094/PHYTO-07-25-0233-R

Fig. 1. Visualization of Fusarium wilt disease rating scale (0 to 5) and representative stem cross-section (arrows) showing vascular discoloration in the Louisiana sweetpotato population. Disease rating is listed as 0 = no symptoms, 1 = slight vascular discoloration with no external symptoms, 2 = moderate vascular discoloration with no external symptoms, 3 = lower leaves yellowed and incipient wilting, 4 = extensive wilting, and 5 = plant dead (Clark et al. 1998).

A genome-wide association study of 178 maize inbred lines uncovered new clues to #Fusarium stalk rot resistance. Yanyan Liu et al. identified both previously reported resistance regions and a novel locus on chromosome 9: https://doi.org/10.1094/PHYTO-10-25-0331-R

Here's a bit more about the developed resistant #Cavendish variety:

www.abc.net.au/news/science...

It carries a resistance gene (MamRGA2) from a wild #Banana relative - an NLR that structurally could be part of a #resistosome:

#Fusarium oxysporum TR4 is spreading in Australia, threatening to destroy the local #Banana industry.

Meanwhile, we already have a resistant variety - developed in Australia - but growers don't use it, because of people's irrational fear of GMOs.
We first need a disaster, it seems.
