In a horrifying video circulating online, the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces (RSF) mass executed 23 civilians in Umm Badr in Sudan's North Kordofan state. The victims were forced onto their stomachs with their hands tied behind their backs, as they pleaded for their lives, before they were killed. A man recording said the victims were thieves who had stolen from a local market.
Since waging war on Sudan, the RSF has repeatedly publicised and glorified similar mass killings across Sudan, which the UN has described as "g*nocidal". Yet, Western diplomacy continues to equate the RSF with Sudan's national army, which is challenged by data from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

With over 5.1 million displaced Sudanese returning home, the vast majority have gone to areas retaken by the army., as its advances close in on the RSF's stronghold in the Darfur region of western Sudan.
However, the US has been accused of offering the militia a lifeline. In August, it pushed for a nationwide Sudan arms embargo at the UN Security Council, which analysts argued would only hinder the Sudanese army since it relies on legal defence agreements.
The US is also pushing for a ceasefire, which Sudan says would allow the RSF to regroup and continue perpetrating massacres.
